Oh where have I been? You miss one day, and all hell breaks loose. Anyways, as most of you probably know, Paris Hilton was released yesterday after serving only 3 days in jail. She was released because some psychiatrist said she was going to have a nervouse breakdown (hello Joe Francis), so she will have to serve out the rest of her term on house arrest. Lucky bitch.
Lot’s of folks are outraged by this decision. Especially Al Sharpton. He criticized the California justice system for their blatent double standard, and you know what? I agree with the guy. That doesn’t happen often, but it did today. He says:
This early release gives all the appearances of economic and racial favoritism that is constantly cited by poor people and people of color. There are any number of cases of people who handle being incarcerated badly and even have health conditions that are not released.
Other folks are coming out now criticizing the decision as well. L.A. city attorney Rocky Delgadillo released a statement saying his office was not notified of the decision by the Sheriff’s department.
My office was not advised of this action. Had we been provided with the proper notification, we would have opposed the decision on legal grounds.
News reports indicate that the Sheriff’s Department released Ms. Hilton to house arrest due to a medical condition. This explanation is puzzling. Los Angeles county jail medical facilities are well-equipped to deal with medical situations involving inmates.
I am also concerned that the judicial process may have been improperly circumvented in this case. Ms. Hilton was incarcerated as a condition of her probation. As a result, the judge retained jurisdiction over her case and only the judge has the power to modify these conditions of probation.
I have directed my criminal branch to immediately explore all possible legal options to ensure that the law is being applied equally and justly in this case.
If law enforcement officials are to enjoy the respect of those we are charged with protecting, we cannot tolerate a two-tiered jail system where the rich and powerful receive special treatment. We must ensure that in our city, in our nation, and under our Constitution, justice remains blind.
You go tell ‘em Rocky. However, I saw this coming from a mile away. No way were they going to make her serve the full sentence, and have justice be served. She’s a rich brat with money to spend, and everyone else can suck it as far as the justice system is concerned. I’m just jaded like that.
